Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK), a pharmaceuticals and medical device maker, has built a biopharmaceutical production facility in Watertown, Massachusetts. The 350,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art, greenhouse-like facility is capable of processing tens of millions of biologics, vaccines and other complex products. The facility, which is capable of processing 75 million doses of medications and vaccines a year, supplies a vast network of hospitals and other health facilities. After acquiring the pharmaceutical and medical device firm Chiron Corporation last year for $1.3 billion, Merck has $7.8 billion in biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity on its books. The capacity is mostly centered in Germany. But that production footprint has expanded.
